Urso (Ursodiol)
General information
Urso is a bile acid that decreases the amount of cholesterol produced by the liver and absorbed by the intestines. It helps break down cholesterol that has formed into stones in the gallbladder. Urso also increases bile flow in patients with primary biliary cirrhosis. It is used to treat a group of conditions known as cholestatic liver diseases (e.g., primary biliary cirrhosis).
Directions
Take Urso exactly as prescribed by your doctor. To treat cholestatic liver diseases, the recommended adult dose is based on body weight. Your doctor will calculate a dose of 13 mg to 15 mg per kilogram of body weight per day, taken by mouth in 2 to 4 divided doses with food.
Precautions
Before taking Urso you should talk with your doctor if you have liver disease, gallbladder problems (acute cholecystitis, cholangitis, biliary obstruction, gallstone pancreatitis, biliary-gastrointestinal fistula). This drug may make you dizzy. Do not drive or perform tasks that require alertness. Limit alcoholic beverages. Avoid using antacids. They can make it harder for your body to absorb ursodiol.
Contraindications
You should not take Urso if you are allergic to ursodiol or to any of the ingredients of the medication. Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Possible side effect
Get emergency medical help if you have fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms, stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, dizziness, tired feeling, back pain, hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, runny or stuffy nose, cold symptoms, headache, back pain, hair loss, increased thirst and urination, easy bleeding. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor.

Tell your doctor or prescriber about all prescription, over-the-counter, and herbal medications you are taking.
Missed dose
Take the missed dose as soon as possible. Skip the missed dose if it is time for your next scheduled dose. Don't take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Overdose
If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once. The overdose symptom is diarrhea.
