Parlodel (Bromocriptine)

General information

Parlodel is in a group of drugs called dopamine receptor agonists. It has some of the same effects as a chemical called dopamine, which occurs naturally in your body. Low levels of dopamine in the brain are associated with Parkinson's disease. Bromocriptine also reduces your levels of prolactin, a hormone that is released from the pituitary gland. It is used to treat hyperprolactinemia (high levels of the hormone prolactin), Parkinson's disease and other similar conditions (when used in combination with other medications), acromegaly (a hormonal growth disorder). Parlodel works for hyperprolactinemia by decreasing prolactin production by the pituitary gland.

Directions

Take Parlodel exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The starting dosage for treating hyperprolactinemia (or infertility) is 1.25 to 2.5 mg once daily with food. Your doctor may increase your dose by 2.5 mg every two to seven days until results are seen. Most people end up at a dose 2.5 to 15 mg per day. Take Parlodel with food, even if you take it at bedtime.
