General information

Methylcobalamin is a form of Vitamin B12 that differs from cyanocobalamin in that the cyanide is replaced by a methyl group. Vitamin B12 is responsible for normal nervous system functioning and process of blood cell formation. Patients that suffer from B12 deficiency should be treated with B12 Methylcobalamin supplement. Methylcobalamin is in the treatment of peripheral neuropathy, neuralgia, diabetic neuropathy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. It also can be applied to treat hepatitis, fatty degeneration of the liver, chronic pancreatitis, liver cirrhosis. Methylcobalamin takes part in the process of transmethylation, oxygen transportation, facilitates methionine synthesis. It improves protein synthesis and accelerates protein storage by the body. It is an essential element applied to prevent depression and senile psychosis. It also helps to slow deterioration of mental activity in patients that have AIDS.

Directions

Take this medication exactly as your doctor has prescribed it. You must carefully follow all directions. Avoid exceeding your dose or taking the medication longer than it was advised by your doctor. The standard recommended dose of Methylcobalamin is 10 mg taken once per day in case of peripheral nervous system disorder. To treat hepatic disease and pancreatitis patients should take 5 mg 2 times per day or 10 mg once daily. Treatment course is being performed during 3-4 weeks. This medicine is taken orally. Put a tablet under the tongue thus it can be dissolved slowly. Change its place to avoid mucous membrane irritation.

Precautions

Notify your doctor of any other medications that you might be taking besides this one. Taking this drug with a certain class of other medicines may result in increasing or decreasing the effects or alter them in either drug. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to Methylcobalamin, in case you are pregnant (or plan to be pregnant) or breastfeeding a child.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to Methylcobalamin.

Possible side effect

An adverse drug response may involve allergic reactions such as difficulty breathing, hives, wheezing, itchy ran, chest pain and swelling of the face. Allergic reactions are known as life-threatening conditions that may cause shock. Thus seek emergency medical help in case you develop any allergy symptoms while being treated with Methylcobalamin. Rarely Methylcobalamin can cause blood clots formation resulting in pulmonary embolisms, heart attacks, strokes.

Drug interactions

This medication is able to interact with a class of anticonvulsants, mood-stabilizing medications (carbamazepine); antidepressants that act as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (fluvoxamine); a class of macrolide antibiotics (erythromycin); a class of bacterial antibiotics of the rifamycin group (rifampicin); histamine H2-receptor antagonists, cholestyramine, chloramphenicol, neomycin colchicines, metformin (a medicine applied in the treatment of type 2 diabetes) lower the absorption of vitamin B12 from food. Please check also your doctor the type and amount of liquids, meals, food supplements and other medications (especially herbal) you are allowed to take concurrently with this product.

Missed dose

If you have missed your dose, take it as soon as possible. In case it is near the time for the next dose, avoid taking the missed dose and keep your ordinary dosing schedule. Avoid compensating a missed dose by taking an extra one.

Overdose

If you suspect you have used too much of this medication, seek emergency medical attention right away. You must do this even if symptoms of discomfort or poisoning haven’t been indicated at once. You may need urgent medical attention. Symptoms of overdose include frequent urination, because your body pulls water to dilute toxic elements, cloudy urine, muscle and joints pain, mental confusion, diarrhea, nausea.

Storage

Store this product in a dry tight container away from sources of sunlight, heat and moisture. Do not store it in the bathroom. Keep this product out of the reach of children and pets. Do not apply any remnants of the medication after the expiry date.
