Venlor (Venlafaxine)

General information

Venlor is a bicyclic antidepressant that belongs to the serotonin-norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) class. It is chiefly used to treat depression, general anxiety disorder, social phobia, panic disorder. It is also known to be effective in the treatment of diabetic neuropathy and migraines.

Directions

You need to consult a doctor regarding the appropriate dosage intake. Carefully follow all directions. Avoid exceeding your dose or taking the medication longer than it was advised. This medication is not chewed, crushed or broken while taking, so you must swallow it whole with a full glass of water. It can be taken concurrently with food. Generally it is recommended to take Venlor once a day in the morning or evening.

Precautions

Notify all doctors, dentists and pharmacists you visit that you are taking this medication. In case you are about to start taking new medications, tell your doctor or pharmacist that you are already Venlor. This medication is prescribed cautiously in case you suffer from liver or kidney diseases (hepatitis or cirrhosis), glaucoma, hypertension and cardiac insufficiency. Do not use this medication in case you are pregnant (plan to be pregnant) or breastfeeding a child. Follow your doctor's instructions about the type and amount of liquids, meals, food supplements and other medications you are allowed to take concurrently with this product. Do not use this medication after the expiration date.

Contraindications

This medication is contraindicated in patients having displayed hypersensitivity to it. Venlor is also contraindicated in pregnant, nursing women and children. It also must not be used consentaneously with a monoamine oxidase inhibitor as it can cause potentially fatal serotonin syndrome. Avoid consuming alcohol while being treated with Venlor.

Possible side effect

The most regular side effects include nausea/vomiting, fever, digestive upsets (diarrhea), blurred vision, sexual dysfunction. Sometimes an allergic reaction may occur. This is not a complete list of all possible side effects. Others may occur in some patients and there may be some side effects not known yet. At any rate, notify your doctor or local poison centre at once if you experience any side effects that are bothersome for you.

Drug interactions

This medication is able to interact with a class of psychotropic, mood-stabilizing medications such as monoamine oxidase inhibitors or MAOIs used to treat depression (isocarboxazid, tranylcypromine); Antidepressants that act as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (fluvoxamine, citalopram) and are used to treat depression and anxiety disorders; Typical antipsychotic drugs (fluphenazine) used to treat schizophrenia and acute manic phases of bipolar disorder; H2 receptor antagonists (cimetidine, ranitidine, famotidine, nizatidine) that inhibit stomach acid production and used to treat peptic ulcer and gastroesophageal reflux disease; Antiarrhythmic agents such as fast channel blockers (quinidine, procainamide, disopyramide etc.), beta-blockers (propranolol, esmolol, timolol etc.), slow-channel blockers (verapamil, diltiazem etc.) that are used to suppress abnormal rhythms of the heart. Venlor should be carefully administered concurrently with St. John’s Wort.

Missed dose

In case you have missed to take a dose of this medication, take it as soon as possible. If you are already supposed to take the next dose, do not take the dose you forgot and keep your ordinary dosing schedule. Do not take two dosages right away.

Overdose

If you suspect you have used too much of this medication, seek emergency medical attention right away. You must do this even if symptoms of discomfort or poisoning haven’t been indicated at once. You may need urgent medical attention. Usually symptoms of overdose include loss of appetite and weight, sleeping disorders, drowsiness, dizziness, fatigue, headache, palpitations, and syncope.

Storage

This medication is stored in a cool dry place, away from sources of sunlight, heat and moisture. Do not store it in the bathroom. Keep this product out of the reach of children and pets.
